Part 1: The Roadtrip Girl Quarantine Diaries

We woke up to a different world just a week ago.

We now live in a world where we’ve been asked to work from home and practice social distancing. I hope everyone is following the rules! It’s our responsibility to take precautions and minimize the spread of the virus, especially to those with compromised immune systems. If you’re interested in reading more about the severity of COVID-19 in a world where we did not take the appropriate measures, this is a great read.

I thought staying home would mean more time to update this blog but it turns out, I’m even busier than before. I had a blog post ready for March on our trip to Japan (teaser pictures below :P) but thought it would be insensitive to post at this time so I thought I’d just provide an update on how we’ve been keeping busy at home.

Travel: On Hold

A year ago in March, we were exploring the Big Island of Ha’waii. Just a few months ago we were revisiting Hong Kong and experiencing Japan for the first time. A few weeks ago we were in Montreal and very recently, I was in Niagara Falls for work.

We had so many plans to travel this year! We booked an Eastern Europe trip for 2 weeks to Budapest, Vienna, Salzburg, and Prague that we both really, really looked forward to. But we’ve cancelled our trip. We have another trip in July that’s booked so we’re holding out a bit for that and hopefully we get to spend New Years by the beach in San Diego.

Work

On an average work day, I roll out of bed at the absolute last minute, do my morning routine and head downstairs in my sweats to turn on my laptop while making my latte. Then I sit there till at least 7pm every night with no break in between.

But it’s been nice! My husband is home too and clearly way less busy since most of his projects are on hold, so he’s been doing all the cooking. I have to admit, he’s an amazing cook. Maybe being an engineer makes his cooking super precise, while I just eyeball everything lol.

Home Life

Typically I don’t sleep in too much on the weekends anymore. Carl wakes up early for the gym and wakes up the dogs and in turn, wakes me up. However, we’ve both been sleeping in on the weekends, it’s lovely. We’ll stay in bed for a while, wake up to get ready for the day, make breakfast together and take the dogs out for a nice walk. If required, we’ll go run quick errands together. Since I can’t go to my trainer at the gym and he can’t go to his F45 sessions, we’ve also both been working out at home (although I’ve missed a day or two already…). Mostly we cuddle on the couch to watch our favourite shows.

Learning Something New

With new found time on weekends and in the evenings, I decided to pick up a new hobby – gardening! While it’s still a bit cold outside, I’ve started some seeds and also started experimenting with delicious microgreens! I’ve harvested the pea shoots already and now working on arugula (my fave) and broccoli microgreens.

So really, all is well! How are you dealing with cancelled travel plans and staying at home? I would love to know!

For now, stay safe. Stay healthy!
