If Hong Kong is on your list of places to visit, now is the time! I know the media has made Hong Kong seem like a rather an unsafe to be but I didn’t feel that to be true when I was there. There were no riots and ‘clashes’ are typically isolated events. But be sure to learn more about what these protests are about – this article is a great resource. Everywhere we went, it felt like business as usual except there were smaller crowds.
I feel like I haven’t blogged about Hong Kong in a while so here are some of the new things we tried in December of 2019.
Disneyland Hong Kong
Since we’ve gone back to Hong Kong quite frequently in the recent years, we wanted to visit a few new places and while Hong Kong Disney isn’t a new attraction, it was one of the last places on our list. Hong Kong Disneyland is really small compared to the other theme parks around the world but it was good for a one day trip. There were absolutely no line ups. It was amazing. If you’re looking to visit Hong Kong, now is the time!
Tai Mo Shan (大帽山)
Tai Mo Shan is the highest peak in Hong Kong. Our plan was to hike up this mountain until somebody hurt their ankle playing volleyball. Instead, we cheated and my uncle drove us up. Tai Mo Shan offered a great view overlooking parts of China and would’ve been worth the hike! On our way to Tai Mo Shan, we also visited this old dim sum restaurant. While the food was good and the villagers were friendly, I’m not sure I’d go back…
Harbour Grand Hotel
One of the things I’ve wanted to do for a long time in Hong Kong was to stay in a room to take in that amazing harbour view and we finally got the chance to! Instead of staying with family, we went to the Harbour Grand Hotel in Hong Kong. The staff there was super attentive and we loved our room with a private patio jacuzzi. We spent the night in and ordered room service and the food was excellent as well! We also got access to the Harbour Club executive lounge at the top of the tower on the 41st floor that offered another amazing view of the habour on both the Kowloon and Hong Kong side.
PMQ & Tai Kwun
PMQ (old Police Married Quarters) and Tai Kwun (old police station) have been repurposed as a tourist attraction. While we visited these places last year, they were worth going back to. PMQ offers 6 levels of artistic & fashionable boutiques by local artists and Tai Kwun tells stories of the life of officers and prisoners when the station was still in operation.
December Weather in Hong Kong
The last time I was in Hong Kong during the month of December was probably 30 years ago. I forgot that Hong Kong actually has bearable weather! Last year when I went back in November, it was still a bit too hot for me. December weather offered a breezy 20ºC — perfect for summer dresses and a light jacket in the evening.
And lastly…
This blog post isn’t to encourage you to take advantage of the vulnerability of Hong Kong right now, but to better understand what the city is going through. Don’t be deterred to visit because of what you see in the news. Hong Kong is a uniquely wonderful place and I hope it continues to be for years to come.
