I am so excited for this trip that you guys helped me pick! Based on this travel poll, you determined my next travel destination – Italy! We looked around to package some deals and thought we landed on a good one from Groupon Getaways*…which didn’t turn out much of a deal but we have now determined the hotel, and flights. We’ll be in the Florence area (Hotel Fattoria Degli Usignoli) area for 4 days and Rome area (Hotel Villa Mercede) for 2 days…so now what?
I went to Twitter to ask which travel guide you would recommend and I recently received Rick Steves’ in the mail, all 1271 pages of it, it’s a great read but also a bit intimidating!
I’m here to collect tips and pointers I’ve received so far on this trip and I figured this would be a great way to share with you guys too.
Here is the list so far, please feel free to contribute:
- Look for tax back
- Leather shopping in Florence
- Sign up for Colosseum tours at night vs. day
- Consider the Firenze Card for Florence and Romapass for Rome
- Local ATMs for better exchange rate
- Reserve online for popular attractions to save line up time
Leave your tip in the comment section below – the more the merrier! Be sure to provide a link to your website so I can have your tip credited.
Thanks!

*Non-US users MUST be aware of the exchange rate. Somewhere hidden in very fine print, Groupon Getaways is offered in USD even if a local Groupon site takes you there. This is how I ended up paying 30% more and went through really terrible customer service response.
