You’ll find in many of my post I refer to “Carl”. Carl and I have been together for almost 12 years but we never really started traveling together until 5 years ago and even then, they were trips to visit his parents in San Diego so not much planning was required on our part.

People say that traveling with your partner can ultimately make-or-break the relationship or even friendships and I find that to be true. From the initial stages of planning the trip, to actually going through with the plans, there’s a lot of decisions to be made. Sometimes we find ourselves in disagreements but it’s important that both parties contribute to the process. You find out quite a bit about each other. While Carl is a relentless spender (he says I’m exaggerating), I like digging for great deals so we always have to compromise. I also find that when we travel together and so happen to get lost, we keep each other calm and just enjoy the moments getting back on track.

Here are some reasons why I love traveling with a partner:

  1. They make great pillows – this is important, especially for 16 hour flights
  2. The good ones share their food – you get more variety!
  3. I have a poor sense of direction so it’s a bonus if they know where they’re going
  4. I feel safer with a travel partner
  5. You can split multiple travel costs
  6. For those who don’t live together yet, you get to know more about their habits
  7. More time for conversation, more topics for discussion
  8. And most importantly, there will be someone to share the memories and moments with when we get back home
